Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery - Perfusion, Waikato Hospital, Hamilton In the treatment of cancer, isolated limb perfusion (ILP) allows what would be a lethal systemic dose of cytotoxic drugs to be administered directly to a tumour site of an extremity. Unfortunately, ILP is a complex, expensive, time-consuming treatment that requires general anaesthesia, vascular surgery and expertise with extracorporeal circuits that may not be available outside a cardiac centre. By streamlining the traditional ILP protocols and eliminating the oxygenator from the circuit, an equally safe and effective technique of hypoxic hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion has been developed.
